Teacher: Quizzes & Question Bank

Creating a Quiz in Moodle is a two-step process: first, you create the questions (Question Bank), and second, you build the quiz "shell" and add the questions to it.

Step 1: The Question Bank (Do this first!)

Think of the Question Bank as a library. You write questions here, and they are saved forever, ready to be used in any quiz.

1. Go to the course main page.
2. Click More (secondary menu) → Question bank.
3. Select a Category: Use the dropdown to choose "Default for [Course Name]".
   • Tip: Create a new category (e.g., "Midterm Questions") to keep things organized.
4. Click Create a new question.

Common Question Types

• Multiple choice: Can be "One answer only" or "Multiple answers allowed".
• True/False: Simple binary choice.
• Essay: A text box for open-ended answers. Note: The system cannot auto-grade this. You must grade it manually.
• Short answer: The student types a word. The system matches it against your list of correct keywords (case sensitivity options available).

Step 2: Creating the Quiz Shell

Now that you have questions, create the exam paper.

1. Return to the course page.
2. Turn Edit mode ON.
3. Add an activity → Quiz.
4. Name: e.g., "Chapter 1 Review".

Key Settings

• Timing:
  • Open/Close the quiz: The window of availability.
  • Time limit: Once they start, how long do they have? (e.g., 60 minutes).
  • When time expires: Choose "Open attempts are submitted automatically". This prevents students from losing work if they forget to hit submit.
• Grade:
  • Attempts allowed: "1" for exams, "Unlimited" for practice.
• Review options (Crucial!):
  • These checkboxes control when students see their score and the correct answers.
  • Immediately after the attempt: Good for practice quizzes.
  • After the quiz is closed: Best for exams (prevents students sharing answers).

Step 3: Adding Questions to the Quiz

You have a shell, but it's empty.

1. Click the Quiz title to open it.
2. You will see a message: "No questions have been added yet".
3. Click the Add question button.
4. Click Add (on the right) → from question bank.
5. Select your category (e.g., "Midterm Questions").
6. Check the boxes next to the questions you want.
7. Click Add selected questions to the quiz.

Shuffling

• Check the box Shuffle at the top of the question list if you want every student to see questions in a random order.
